Have you ever faced discouragement?
It’s like asking someone if they have a pulse!!
We ALL have, and some are going through it…especially given the current climate, the spirit of discouragement is everywhere…
Discouragement is defined as;
a loss of confidence or enthusiasm; dispiritedness.
It manifests in different ways such as depression, hopelessness, despair, disappointment or low spirits.
Discouragement can be a hindrance,restriction and constraints, if not dealt with, it borrows into one’s soul and very soon affects us physically, psychologically, emotionally and even spiritually. The enemy is cunning and will do whatever he can to keep you in a state of unconsciousness and get you to disengage with the important things and people in your life!
One key thing about discouragement that most seem to forget, is we can overcome it using the power God has placed in us. God is not surprised when we hit this obstacle in our lives but what he does is equip us with the right strategies to fight and reminds us who we are in Christ.
Discouragement is a feeling and not a state of being..it is simply an emotional response. Since feelings are fleeting, this means it has no foundation but it’s rather a symptom and so you shouldn’t build on a “feeling”.. It is not something stable to build on because it is affected by external factors.
STRATEGIES TO APPLY WHEN FEELING DISCOURAGED;
1. Recognise it! Unless you name it, you will struggle to conquer it. Remember, there is no name above the name of Jesus and once you identify it, it has to bow.
2. Watch the words you say. Speak positivity over yourself, and remember that life and death is in your tongue. When we are overcome our voices can sometimes be out worst enemy,take control over your mind and put it under subjection.
3. Pace yourself through it…you won’t just get over it unless you deal with its causes, so take time to understand firstly how it affects you and where it manifests. Ask for prayer and support and have people stand with you as you go through!
4. Don’t see it as a weakness..it’s a process you’re going through, as long as you don’t stop pushing, God will show you a way out!
5. Learn something from it. Use it as a learning tool rather than a punishing one. What can you learn about yourself and/or the situation? What are your triggers? Can you improve coping mechanisms.
6. Create boundaries. Remember discouragement can seep into different parts of your lives. What in your life is inter mixing? What is not balancing?Find a way to separate work and home.
7. Choose your company wisely. Go where you are encouraged and supported and not where they allow you to dwell in discouragement. Seek counsel and support from friends and family that you trust.
8. Refocus your view. Perception is everything. Sometimes how we look at a situation especially over and over can affect our ability to respond effectively. What you’re looking at? Is your focus just on the issue or are you trying to find solutions? How you look at it, definitely matters!
9. Take time out for yourself…you matter..Pray, fast, read, go for a walk, whatever you need to recover and gain some strength to face another day!
10. Remember who you are! Remember this is a feeling and not a state of being, change how you speak over yourself. See yourself past your current situation and declare the word of God over yourself.
